A comparative study of marine litter on the seafloor of coastal areas in the Eastern Mediterranean and Black Seas ArchiMer
Ioakeimidis, C.; Zeri, C.; Kaberi, H.; Galatchi, M.; Antoniadis, K.; Streftaris, N.; Galgani, Francois; Papathanassiou, E.; Papatheodorou, G..
In the present work, abundance, spatial distribution and qualitative composition, of benthic marine litter, were investigated in five study areas from the Eastern Mediterranean and Black Seas (Saronikos, Patras and Echinades Gulfs; Limassol Gulf; Constanta Bay). Surveys were performed using the monitoring protocol proposed by the Technical Group for Marine Litter. Densities ranged from 24 items/km(2) to 1211 items/km(2), with the Saronikos Gulf being the most affected area. Plastics were predominant in all study areas ranging from 45.2% to 95%. Metals and Glass/Ceramics reached maximum values of 21.9% and of 22.4%. The size distribution of litter items showed that >= 50% fall into medium size categories (10 x 10 cm, 20 x 20 cm) along with an elevated...

Abrupt changes of temperature and water chemistry in the late Pleistocene and early Holocene Black Sea ArchiMer
Bahr, Andre; Lamy, Frank; Arz, Helge W.; Major, Candace; Kwiecien, Olga; Wefer, Gerold.
[1] New Mg/Ca, Sr/Ca, and published stable oxygen isotope and Sr-87/(86) Sr data obtained on ostracods from gravity cores located on the northwestern Black Sea slope were used to infer changes in the Black Sea hydrology and water chemistry for the period between 30 to 8 ka B. P. ( calibrated radiocarbon years). The period prior to 16.5 ka B. P. was characterized by stable conditions in all records until a distinct drop in delta O-18 values combined with a sharp increase in Sr-87/(86) Sr occurred between 16.5 and 14.8 ka B. P. This event is attributed to an increased runoff from the northern drainage area of the Black Sea between Heinrich Event 1 and the onset of the Bolling warm period. While the Mg/Ca and Sr/Ca records remained rather unaffected by this...

The Black Sea has suffered severe environmental degradation. Governance of the Black Sea region is complex and results in a series of scale mismatches which constrain management. This paper develops a simple classification of spatial scale mismatches incorporating the driver, pressure, state, welfare, response (DPSWR) framework. The scale mismatch classification is applied to two major environmental problems of the Black Sea, eutrophication and small pelagic fisheries. A number of scale mismatches are described and classified and potential solutions are identified.

Analyse des processus sedimentaires recents dans l'eventail profond du Danube (mer Noire) ArchiMer
Popescu, Irina.
This study is focusing on the architecture and recent sedimentary evolution of the Danube channel, the youngest channel-levee system in the Danube deep-sea fan. The study was conducted as part of the BlaSON French-Romanian Project, and combined high-resolution seismic-reflection profiles and chirp profiles with multibeam bathymetry and piston cores. This data set was acquired in 1998 during a joint survey IFREMER-GeoEcoMar of the north-western Black Sea. Previous seismic and acoustic data were also used. The Danube deep-sea fan is a large passive-margin mud-rich fan. Like the other systems of this type (Amazon fan, Mississippi fan or Indus fan) the Danube fan consists of stacked channel-levee systems intercalated with mass-transport deposits. Seismic and...

Annual dynamics of abundance, biomass and survival of meroplankton in Sevastopol Bay, Black Sea IBSS Repository
Pavlova, E. V.; Murina, V. V.; Kemp, R. B.; Wilson, J. G.; Parchevsky, V. P..
The first comprehensive data on species composition, abundance, biomass and survival (living/dead ratio) of meroplankton in Sevastopol Bay (Black Sea) are presented. Marked differences were observed between the years 1998 and 1999, and these could be attributed to the hydrology and the eutrophication status of the different parts of the Bay. Shannon index and selected community parameters (number of species, biomass, numbers of individuals) indicated that South Bay was the worst affected part of the Bay with the greatest eutrophication impact on the meroplankton. The early larval stages of the barnacle Balanus improvisus and of the polychaete Polydora sp. were the most sensitive to presumed environmental stresses. It is suggested that the mortality of...

Anomalously deep BSR related to a transient state of the gas hydrate system in the western Black Sea ArchiMer
Ker, Stephan; Thomas, Yannick; Riboulot, Vincent; Sultan, Nabil; Bernard, Céline; Scalabrin, Carla; Ion, G; Marsset, Bruno.
A comprehensive characterization of the gas hydrate system offshore the western Black Sea was performed through an integrated analysis of geophysical data. We detected the Bottom Simulating Reflector (BSR), which marks, in this area, the base of gas hydrate stability. The observed BSR depth does not fit the theoretical steady-state base of gas hydrate stability zone (BGHSZ). We show that the disparity between the BSR and predicted BGHSZ is the result of a transient state of the hydrate system due to the ongoing re-equilibrium since the Last Glacial Maximum. When gas hydrates are brought outside the stability zone due to changes in temperature and sea level, their dissociation generates an increase in interstitial pore pressure. This process is favorable to...

Are Preferences for Environmental Quality Sensitive to Financial Funding Schemes? Evidence from a Marine Restoration Programme in the Black Sea AgEcon
Remoundou, Kyriaki; Koundouri, Phoebe; Adaman, Fikret; Nunes, Paulo A.L.D..
This paper uses a non-market valuation study to elicit consumers’ preferences for a marine restoration programme in the Black Sea aiming to reduce the level of public health risk from bathing and improve water quality and the overall level of marine biodiversity. In this context, we administer a stated choice experiment in coastal settlements in Ukraine and Turkey and employ two tax revenue reallocation schemes as payment vehicles. One proposes the financing of the marine restoration programme by the reduction of the public budget for renewable energy and the second by the reduction of the public budget on training for civil servants. We examine the stated preferences and the subsequently derived economic value estimates in the two treatments with the aim...

Availability of data for the Black Sea climate change research IBSS Repository
Vladymyrov, V..
This review presents a brief analysis and sources (including URLs for the Internet sources) of the most interesting and informative Black Sea oceanographic data sets (excluding satellite data) that are now available for the scientific community with the main attention on the long term data sets. The results of the analysis show that a number of the available Black Sea datasets is growing permanently. However, this process is still rather slow and insufficient. One can hope that new international projects that cover the Black Sea region will drastically improve the situation in nearest years. The attempts should be made as well to create the united reliable quality checked data time series especially for biological data for which long time series do not...

Barriers in the pelagic: population structuring of Calanus helgolandicus and C. euxinus in European waters Naturalis
Yebra, L.; Bonnet, D.; Harris, R.P.; Lindeque, P.K.; Peijnenburg, K.T.C.A..
Molecular studies of marine plankton have shown that ecological and/or environmental barriers play an important role in separating populations. Calanoid copepods are central in marine ecosystems, and dramatic biogeographical shifts in copepod assemblages associated with recent climate warming have been reported. We examined spatial population structuring in European waters of the Atlantic Ocean and Mediterranean Sea of Calanus helgolandicus and its sister species, C. euxi nus, from the Black Sea based on genetic and morphometric characters. The aims were to identify barriers to dispersal, relate these to hydrographic characteristics and infer historical patterns of distribution and demography. We analysed a 408 bp fragment of the mitochondrial 16S gene...

Basin-wide estimates of the input of methane from seeps and clathrates to the Black Sea ArchiMer
Kessler, Jd; Reeburgh, Ws; Southon, J; Seifert, R; Michaelis, W; Tyler, Sc.
Numerous methane-emitting bottom features, such as seeps, methane clathrate hydrates (clathrates), and mud volcanoes, have been identified recently in the Black Sea. The fluxes of methane from these sources averaged over large spatial scales are unknown. Here we take advantage of the fact that the Black Sea is a semi-enclosed basin with restricted deep water circulation to establish first-order estimates of basin-wide fluxes of methane from these sources to the water column and atmosphere. First, we measured tile natural radiocarbon content of methane (C-14-CH4) dissolved in the water column and emitted from seeps. The C-14-CH4 results showed that the dominant source of methane to the water column is emitted from seeps and a smaller source is...

Black Sea "Lake" reservoir age evolution since the Last Glacial - Hydrologic and climatic implications ArchiMer
Soulet, Guillaume; Menot, Guillemette; Garreta, Vincent; Rostek, Frauke; Zaragosi, Sebastien; Lericolais, Gilles; Bard, Edouard.
Chronologies of sediments that document the last glacial history of the Black Sea "Lake" are hampered by issues relating to reservoir age. Regulated by basin hydrology, reservoir ages represent a tool that could potentially be used to better understand the response of Black Sea "Lake" hydrology to climate change. Therefore, deciphering reservoir age evolution is crucial both for better constraining the basin chronological framework and for providing new insights into our understanding of Black Sea "Lake" hydrology. By tuning a meaningful new high-resolution geochemical dataset (obtained from core MD04-2790) to a climate reference record, here, we propose a reliable chronology spanning the last 32 kyr BP. The chronology is compared to a large AMS...

Black Sea vertical circulation and extremes of the hydrochemical and hydrooptical parameters ArchiMer
Bulgakov, Sn; Kushnir, Vm; Martinez, A.
A statistical evaluation of vertical current velocity profiles w(z) has been undertaken using data provided by current meter profilers. The calculation of profiles w(z) involves the estimation of the standard deviation of vertical current at each depth level, and the standard deviation of the statistical variability of that estimate. Profiles w(z) have been computed for the northwestern Black Sea, using current meter and CTD data from three surveys carried out during 1992-1994. The calculations show w(z) to have a two-layered structure, with zero values occurring in the main pycnocline. Such vertical current structures are consistent with a hydrodynamic model, whereby the current field is induced by buoyancy fluxes through the lateral basin boundaries....

Caractérisation des systèmes gaz/hydrates de gaz de la Mer Noire par imagerie sismique haute résolution remorquée en fond de mer (SYSIF) ArchiMer
Colin, Florent.
The study of marine gas hydrates in great water depths using seismic data is limited by the resolution of current acquisition systems. The acquisition of very highresolution multichannel deep-towed seismic data aims to break this limitation. Deep-towed seismic system can provide seismic data with metric vertical resolution when the proper processing sequence is employed. However, the processing of deep-towed multichannel data is challenging as the source and receivers are constantly moving with respect to each other. In the first part of this PhD project, we developed processing methods tailored to the acquisition system SYstème SIsmique de Fond (SYSIF), developed by Ifremer. The processing sequence allows vertical and lateral resolutions up to 0.65 m and...

The common mussel Mytilus galloprovincialis was selected as unique biomonitor species to implement a regional monitoring programme, the CIESM Mediterranean Mussel Watch (MMW), in the Mediterranean and Black Seas. As of today, and upon standardization of the methodological approach, the MMW Network has been able to quantify Cs-137 levels in mussels from 60 coastal stations and to produce the first distribution map of this artificial radionuclide at the scale of the entire Mediterranean and Black Seas. While: measured Cs-137 levels were found to be very low (usually <1 Bq kg(-1) wet wt) Cs-137 activity concentrations in the Black Sea and North Aegean Sea were up to two orders of magnitude higher than those in the western Mediterranean Basin. Such effects,...

Difference of mercury bioaccumulation in red mullets from the north-western Mediterranean and Black seas ArchiMer
Harmelin-vivien, M.; Cossa, Daniel; Crochet, Sylvette; Banaru, D.; Letourneur, Y.; Mellon-duval, Capucine.
The relationships between total mercury (Hg) concentration and stable nitrogen isotope ratio (delta N-15) were evaluated in Mullus barbatus barbatus and M. surmuletus from the Mediterranean Sea and M. barbatus ponticus from the Black Sea. Mercury concentration in fish muscle was six times higher in the two Mediterranean species than in the Black Sea one for similar sized animals. A positive correlation between Hg concentration and delta N-15 occurred in all species. Increase in Hg concentration with delta N-15 was high and similar in the two Mediterranean fishes and much lower in the Black Sea species. Since this was neither related to trophic level difference between species nor to methylmercury (MeHg) concentration differences between the north-western...

Element enrichment and provenance of the detrital component in Holocene sediments from the western Black Sea ArchiMer
Dekov, Vesselin M.; Darakchieva, Valentina Y.; Billström, Kjell; Garbe-schönberg, C-dieter; Kamenov, George D.; Gallinari, Morgane; Dimitrov, Lyubo; Ragueneau, Olivier; Kooijman, Ellen.
Concentrations of a large set of major and trace elements, and Sr, Nd and Pb isotope ratios were measured in Holocene sediments cored in the western deep Black Sea in order to unravel: (1) the controls of element enrichment, and (2) sources of the detrital component. The transition of the basin from oxic to euxinic resulted in enrichment or depletion in a number of elements in the deep-sea sediments. Authigenic Fe enrichment appears to depend on the amount of Fe mobilized from the sediment through the benthic redox shuttle mechanism and free H2S in the water column (degree of “euxinization”). Manganese enrichment is controlled by diagenetic reactions within the sediment: the dissolution of Mn minerals, Mn2+ diffusion upward and reprecipitation. Barium...

Environmental and Management Constraints on Tourism in Varna Bay, Bulgarian Black Sea Coast Ecology and Society

We used the systems approach framework (SAF) to study the conflict between the development of tourism and marine environmental quality in Varna Bay, a critical regional policy issue selected for study after stakeholder consultation. Water quality is of central importance to the tourism industry, as a minimum level of water clarity is required to make the water attractive for swimming and bathing. Rampant development of coastal resorts in Varna Bay has led to water-quality deterioration because the tourism capacity has expanded without concurrent increases in the capacity to collect and treat sewage. We used a numerical model to simulate the Secchi depth (as a proxy for transparency) as a function of the nitrogen loading and total suspended solids. The SAF...
