In the present work, abundance, spatial distribution and qualitative composition, of benthic marine litter, were investigated in five study areas from the Eastern Mediterranean and Black Seas (Saronikos, Patras and Echinades Gulfs; Limassol Gulf; Constanta Bay). Surveys were performed using the monitoring protocol proposed by the Technical Group for Marine Litter. Densities ranged from 24 items/km(2) to 1211 items/km(2), with the Saronikos Gulf being the most affected area. Plastics were predominant in all study areas ranging from 45.2% to 95%. Metals and Glass/Ceramics reached maximum values of 21.9% and of 22.4%. The size distribution of litter items showed that >= 50% fall into medium size categories (10 x 10 cm, 20 x 20 cm) along with an elevated... |

[1] New Mg/Ca, Sr/Ca, and published stable oxygen isotope and Sr-87/(86) Sr data obtained on ostracods from gravity cores located on the northwestern Black Sea slope were used to infer changes in the Black Sea hydrology and water chemistry for the period between 30 to 8 ka B. P. ( calibrated radiocarbon years). The period prior to 16.5 ka B. P. was characterized by stable conditions in all records until a distinct drop in delta O-18 values combined with a sharp increase in Sr-87/(86) Sr occurred between 16.5 and 14.8 ka B. P. This event is attributed to an increased runoff from the northern drainage area of the Black Sea between Heinrich Event 1 and the onset of the Bolling warm period. While the Mg/Ca and Sr/Ca records remained rather unaffected by this... |

The Black Sea has suffered severe environmental degradation. Governance of the Black Sea region is complex and results in a series of scale mismatches which constrain management. This paper develops a simple classification of spatial scale mismatches incorporating the driver, pressure, state, welfare, response (DPSWR) framework. The scale mismatch classification is applied to two major environmental problems of the Black Sea, eutrophication and small pelagic fisheries. A number of scale mismatches are described and classified and potential solutions are identified. |

The first comprehensive data on species composition, abundance, biomass and survival (living/dead ratio) of meroplankton in Sevastopol Bay (Black Sea) are presented. Marked differences were observed between the years 1998 and 1999, and these could be attributed to the hydrology and the eutrophication status of the different parts of the Bay. Shannon index and selected community parameters (number of species, biomass, numbers of individuals) indicated that South Bay was the worst affected part of the Bay with the greatest eutrophication impact on the meroplankton. The early larval stages of the barnacle Balanus improvisus and of the polychaete Polydora sp. were the most sensitive to presumed environmental stresses. It is suggested that the mortality of... |

A comprehensive characterization of the gas hydrate system offshore the western Black Sea was performed through an integrated analysis of geophysical data. We detected the Bottom Simulating Reflector (BSR), which marks, in this area, the base of gas hydrate stability. The observed BSR depth does not fit the theoretical steady-state base of gas hydrate stability zone (BGHSZ). We show that the disparity between the BSR and predicted BGHSZ is the result of a transient state of the hydrate system due to the ongoing re-equilibrium since the Last Glacial Maximum. When gas hydrates are brought outside the stability zone due to changes in temperature and sea level, their dissociation generates an increase in interstitial pore pressure. This process is favorable to... |

This review presents a brief analysis and sources (including URLs for the Internet sources) of the most interesting and informative Black Sea oceanographic data sets (excluding satellite data) that are now available for the scientific community with the main attention on the long term data sets. The results of the analysis show that a number of the available Black Sea datasets is growing permanently. However, this process is still rather slow and insufficient. One can hope that new international projects that cover the Black Sea region will drastically improve the situation in nearest years. The attempts should be made as well to create the united reliable quality checked data time series especially for biological data for which long time series do not... |

Numerous methane-emitting bottom features, such as seeps, methane clathrate hydrates (clathrates), and mud volcanoes, have been identified recently in the Black Sea. The fluxes of methane from these sources averaged over large spatial scales are unknown. Here we take advantage of the fact that the Black Sea is a semi-enclosed basin with restricted deep water circulation to establish first-order estimates of basin-wide fluxes of methane from these sources to the water column and atmosphere. First, we measured tile natural radiocarbon content of methane (C-14-CH4) dissolved in the water column and emitted from seeps. The C-14-CH4 results showed that the dominant source of methane to the water column is emitted from seeps and a smaller source is... |

Chronologies of sediments that document the last glacial history of the Black Sea "Lake" are hampered by issues relating to reservoir age. Regulated by basin hydrology, reservoir ages represent a tool that could potentially be used to better understand the response of Black Sea "Lake" hydrology to climate change. Therefore, deciphering reservoir age evolution is crucial both for better constraining the basin chronological framework and for providing new insights into our understanding of Black Sea "Lake" hydrology. By tuning a meaningful new high-resolution geochemical dataset (obtained from core MD04-2790) to a climate reference record, here, we propose a reliable chronology spanning the last 32 kyr BP. The chronology is compared to a large AMS... |

A statistical evaluation of vertical current velocity profiles w(z) has been undertaken using data provided by current meter profilers. The calculation of profiles w(z) involves the estimation of the standard deviation of vertical current at each depth level, and the standard deviation of the statistical variability of that estimate. Profiles w(z) have been computed for the northwestern Black Sea, using current meter and CTD data from three surveys carried out during 1992-1994. The calculations show w(z) to have a two-layered structure, with zero values occurring in the main pycnocline. Such vertical current structures are consistent with a hydrodynamic model, whereby the current field is induced by buoyancy fluxes through the lateral basin boundaries.... |

The common mussel Mytilus galloprovincialis was selected as unique biomonitor species to implement a regional monitoring programme, the CIESM Mediterranean Mussel Watch (MMW), in the Mediterranean and Black Seas. As of today, and upon standardization of the methodological approach, the MMW Network has been able to quantify Cs-137 levels in mussels from 60 coastal stations and to produce the first distribution map of this artificial radionuclide at the scale of the entire Mediterranean and Black Seas. While: measured Cs-137 levels were found to be very low (usually <1 Bq kg(-1) wet wt) Cs-137 activity concentrations in the Black Sea and North Aegean Sea were up to two orders of magnitude higher than those in the western Mediterranean Basin. Such effects,... |

Concentrations of a large set of major and trace elements, and Sr, Nd and Pb isotope ratios were measured in Holocene sediments cored in the western deep Black Sea in order to unravel: (1) the controls of element enrichment, and (2) sources of the detrital component. The transition of the basin from oxic to euxinic resulted in enrichment or depletion in a number of elements in the deep-sea sediments. Authigenic Fe enrichment appears to depend on the amount of Fe mobilized from the sediment through the benthic redox shuttle mechanism and free H2S in the water column (degree of “euxinization”). Manganese enrichment is controlled by diagenetic reactions within the sediment: the dissolution of Mn minerals, Mn2+ diffusion upward and reprecipitation. Barium... |
